The2023 Ram 1500 pickup is shaping up to be another record-selling truck for Stellantis. Right now, it has four engines in the lineup. But the spotlight is actually on a fifth offering, should it come in 2023. It’s the twin-turbo 3.0-liter Hurricane straight-six, that boasts more horsepower and fuel economy than the venerable 5.7-liter Hemi V8.
Ratherthan a typical efficiency-minded full-hybrid configuration, the Hemi eTorque harnesses the 5.7 L V8 to turn a 48-volt alternator which charges a small battery behind the rear bench.
ThePentastar V6 gets better gas mileage than the Hemi V8. This is because the Pentastar V6 is a smaller engine, and thus uses less fuel. The Hemi V8, on the other hand, is a larger engine and thus consumes more fuel. Application: Hemi V8; The Pentastar V6 is typically used in smaller vehicles, such as sedans or crossovers.
Usedforcefully, the Hemi is a potent performer, capable of reaching 100km/h in 6.4 seconds – a lot quicker than the 3.5-litre V6 version’s 9.2 seconds. No real V8 sound intrudes until the engine is working hard, and even then it’s a pretty damped rumble.
Butif you are fine with the 5.7's slightly more modest performance, you can still get the classic Challenger look, Hemi power, the classic V8 sound and even a manual gearbox—all for a relative bargain price. Before you think about settling for a four-cylinder or V6, consider the under-appreciated "small" Hemi Challenger.
